Debussy’s tale of family and forgiveness pairs perfectly with Menotti’s classic holiday story of the young boy who met the Three Kings. The Prodigal Son, music by Claude Debussy, follows the biblical parable which demonstrates the deep love a parent shows for a lost child. Amahl & the Night Visitors, music by Gian Carlo Menotti, meets poor Amahl and his mother, now forced to beg and steal for survival, as they welcome into their home the three kings on their way to greet the newborn King. Both stories exemplify the power of familial love and the capacity each of us has for forgiveness, no matter how difficult. Total running time is 90 minutes with brief intermission.
