Why Bob Loves LOOC - Meet our chair emeritus: a seasoned stage performer, former Peace Core Director, and LOOC's first cheerleader!

Dear Friends,
When I first met Diana Farrell, Lyric Opera of Orange County was just an idea—an ambitious, beautiful idea. I had seen enough in my life to know the difference between dreams that drift and dreams that take root.
This one not only took root — it has flourished, and it has changed lives.
As LOOC’s founding Board Chair, I had the honor of helping steer the growth of this improbable young performing arts initiative from bold experiment into respected, community-centered company. I have served with nonprofit organizations across continents and industries and can say honestly that LOOC has heart, integrity, and purpose, in rare supply.
It’s not easy to build an opera company from scratch. But together, we’ve done it—with scrappy dedication, with cutting edge creativity and above all, with love — love of performers, love of the arts, and love of our community. We’ve brought opera to people who didn’t think opera was for them. We’ve created space for artists who hadn’t yet had a stage. We’ve modified and modernized this classical art form to attract a whole new audience. And we’ve done it without losing our values or our voice.
Now, as LOOC prepares for its next season, I’m asking you to stand with us.
All of us on the LOOC board of directors dedicate our time, energy and treasure to this endeavor. But we can’t do it alone. Please join our community of opera supporters! A gift of $50 or $100 today will help keep the vision alive for future generations of artists, dreamers, and audiences. If you believe in the power of music, of community, of building something that matters — I ask you to give what you can.

Welcome to #SundaySchool! Just kidding—today we’re excited to showcase our incredible in-school programming available throughout Orange County! Our tailored programs cater to all ages, and we highly recommend our Opera Encounters program for our youngest audiences. Students will experience a fully staged and costumed opera performed by three or four of our talented young artists, followed by a chance to join the action on stage! This program features interactive question and answer sessions, opportunities for student participation, and plenty of laughter and creativity! 🌟 #LOOCSingerSpotlight on Ayanna Lewis! 🌟

We caught up with the talented soprano and proud LOOC alumna to hear what she’s been up to since her time with us. Here’s what Ayanna had to say:

Q: What have you been working on recently?
A: I’m currently pursuing my Master’s Degree in Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Houston and am also a studio artist at Wolf Trap. I recently performed Ortlinde at the Miami Music Festival Wagner Institute in 2024.

**Q: How did it feel to make your professional debut in Romeo and Juliet ?**
A: It was absolutely incredible! That was my first professional opera experience, and I loved every moment of it. My favorite role so far has probably been Suor Angelica.

Q: What is your favorite memory from your time at LOOC?
A: My favorite memory has to be the Choose Your Own Adventure concert we performed at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in June 2024! It was an improvised concert where the audience chose which arias they wanted to hear in the moment. It was the most fun I’ve ever had singing onstage! I also enjoyed being a teaching artist for their Opera Engineers camp—working with the kids was a fantastic experience!

In loving memory of Aaron Ball, whose talent and passion touched us profoundly. His debut as Capulet in our March 2023 production of Romeo and Juliet showcased not only his remarkable baritone but also the depth of his artistry. Before that, Aaron played a pivotal role in enhancing our digital presence, serving diligently as videographer and archivist for Lyric Opera OC over the years. His contributions and spirit will always be cherished in our hearts and memories. Rest in peace, "Jack".
