2019-2020 Season Shows Will Bring Fun, Family, and a Flute

August 17, 2019

The new season is upon us and it is sure to be our best one yet! We have something for everyone, whether you’re new to the opera or a seasoned veteran.

We send 2019 out and kick off 2020 with a double bill of Debussy’s The Prodigal Son and Menotti’s Amahl & the Night Visitors in December and January. In The Prodigal Son, Debussy deftly ponders the importance of family and the power of forgiveness in a rarely performed one-act opera that is sure to stun with its impressionist melodic gestures and fresh perspective on the familiar parable. If that’s not enough, Amahl & the Night Visitors, originally written as an opera for radio, introduces us to Amahl, a young boy with the propensity to tell “tall tales,” and his poor mother who will stop at nothing to provide food for her family. A seasonal staple for nearly seven decades, we are sure this classic will become part of your family’s holiday favorites.

Right afterward in February, hear Cinderella as you never have. Pauline Viardot’s lighthearted adaptation of the beloved fairy tale sparkles with beautiful bel canto lines and a fresh interpretation of the well-known characters. But don’t worry: she still rides in a pumpkin carriage drawn by horses that used to—and will soon again—be mice.

In March, catch a one-night-only performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s side-splitting H.M.S. Pinafore. An event that will blow all other Lyric Opera of Orange County productions out of the water in terms of size, scale, and unashamed tongue-in-cheek wit, we are thrilled to partner with the South Coast Symphony and the Festival Singers to bring this comedic gem to life.

And finally, in June we will close the season with Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Set in a 1930s dustbowl carnival, this unique take on the classic will re-introduce you to your favorite characters. Come one, come all to be transported to a land where magic is very real, friendly spirits walk among us, and a magic flute has the power to turn sadness into joy.
